Vance Thompson - director, trumpet
Originally from Maryville, TN, Thompson received a Bachelor's degree in music from the Univ. of Tenn. then moved to Chicago where he earned a Master's degree at DePaul University. Thompson has several original arrangements in the book, one of which, Shade Street, was named best arrangement, college division by Downbeat magazine in 1997.

Mark Tucker - lead alto, flute, soprano
A graduate of UTK, Mark got his Master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to active freelance and teaching careers, Mark plays second clarinet with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

David King - alto, flute
David is finishing his Master's degree in Jazz Studies at UTK. He can be heard around town with Ritmo de la Noche, the Streamliners, as well as his own trio.

Bill Scarlett - tenor, clarinet, soprano
Professor Emeritus Bill Scarlett is arguably the most influential musician in the Knoxville area. After 40 years of teaching at the University of Tennessee, Bill has taught almost every single member of the band in some capacity. Notable pupils include tenor saxophonist Benny Wallace and bassist Dennis Irwin (who Scarlett gave clarinet lessons to).

Jimmy Mann - tenor, clarinet
Jimmy Mann left the Knoxville area in the late 80's to study at William Patterson in New Jersey, just outside NYC. While in the area, Mann played with a number of then up-and-comings including Bill Stewart, Joe Farnsworth, and Jessie Davis.

Tom Johnson

Tom Johnson has been a mainstay in the Knoxville jazz community since the early 1980's. He teaches saxophone and jazz combos at Pellissippi State Community College and can be heard regularly playing tenor and/or piano with his wife Teresa, one of the area's most gifted vocalists.

TRUMPETS

Michael Wyatt
After attending UTK, Michael Wyatt left Knoxville to play lead trumpet with the Tommy Dorsey Band, under the direction of Buddy Morrow. After six and a half years on the road, Michael is back in Knoxville and plays regularly at the Music Mansion in Pigeon Forge.

Stewart Cox
Originally from Chicago, Stewart Cox is a graduate of Indiana University. A first call in Chicago for a number of years, Stewart has also worked in Branson Missouri and now makes his living playing at the Lee Greenwood Theatre in Kodak, TN.

Thomas Heflin
Thomas Heflin hails from Clarksville, TN. After completing his studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Thomas earned a Master of Music degree from William Patterson University in Patterson, New Jersey. While studying there, Heflin worked with James Williams, Harold Mabern, Don Braden, and Bill Mobley. Heflin is back in Knoxville and can be heard every other Friday with the Streamliners, and every Saturday with Silo Fulatang.

TROMBONES

Don Hough
Don Hough has been an integral part of the music scene in Knoxville since the late 50's. In addition to teaching at the University and leading the UT Trombone Choir, Don played principal trombone with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years.

Darrell Wyatt
Darrell graduated from UT in 1994 with a degree in Music Education. He now teaches at West Valley Middle School.

Tom Lundberg
Tom moved to East Tennessee three years ago from Nashville where he had freelanced for a number of years. He has worked with a number of outstanding ensembles including the Duke Pearson Big Band. Tom plays regularly at Governor's Palace Music Theatre in Sevierville and teaches trombone and euphonium at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.

Brad McDougall
Originally from Illinois, Brad graduated from the University of Miami and toured for three years as a member of the jazz group, Matrix. He moved to New York City where he established himself as a free-lance bass trombonist, playing for eight years in the Broadway show, A Chorus Line, and as a frequent substitute in the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and the Ed Palermo Big Band. Brad can be heard regularly with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

RHYTHM

Bill Swann - piano
Bill Swann earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees at UTK and a Doctor of Arts degree from Ole Miss. Bill is currently an assistant professor of music at Maryville College.

Rusty Holloway - Bass
Rusty Holloway is without question one of the bass world's best kept secrets. Holloway toured with Woody Herman when fellow band mates included Joe Lovano, Tim Hagans, Allen Vizzutti, and others. He has performed with a host of jazz luminaries including Dizzy Gillespie, Monty Alexander, Sarah Vaughn, and Clark Terry.  Rusty is a member of the UT jazz faculty and performs regularly in the area at Baker Peter's jazz club with guitarist Mark Boling and drummer Keith Brown.

Keith Brown - Drums
Originally from Knoxville, Keith Brown is one of the great treasures of the local jazz scene. In addition to teaching full time at UT where he conducts the University of Tennessee jazz ensemble, Keith can be heard with Boling, Brown, and Holloway at Baker Peter's on Thursday evenings and at Lucille's on Saturdays with Early Bird featuring Donald Brown.
