The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra is a 501(c)3
non-profit corporation founded in 1999 by trumpeter, composer and arranger Vance Thompson.
The mission of the organization is to promote jazz music through public performance,
education initiatives and the commissioning of new work. The organization is governed by an independent board of directors comprised of
local leaders who are passionate about jazz. Directors are:

The primary education initiative of the KJO is the Knoxville
Jazz Youth Orchestra. Sponsored in conjunction with the University of
Tennessee School of Music, the youth orchestra is selected by audition and
rehearses weekly for 3 months before presenting a joint concert with the KJO. The group is
directed by Don Hough and coached by several members of the KJO.
