Set One: Jack Roben Plays Americana

Americana is often used as a term to loosely describe the many musical traditions of our country including blues, country, Appalachian, and gospel among many others. Each of these traditions contains a wealth of musical treasures, so join us for a night of interpretations of the music and sounds of figures like Roger Miller, Townes Van Zandt, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Elizabeth Cotten, and others.

 Set Two: Taber Gable and the Marble City Brothers

Pianist Taber Gable is a Knoxville native who finds joy and creative fulfillment in many different styles of musical expression. A graduate of Julliard and frequent collaborator with A-list jazz musicians on the international scene, Taber brings deep roots to every type of music that he performs. For this special event, Taber and company will explore the intersection between Pop, Country, Soul, Southern Roots and Jazz. The set will include original compositions as well as covers of groups such as the Derek Trucks Band, Tyler Childers, Christopher Cross, Sons of Champlin and Elton John.

Set One: Sam Adams Love Letter to Knoxville. Music Inspired by the People and Places of East Tennessee.

Since returning to his hometown of Knoxville in 2015, pianist/composer Sam Adams has been changed and shaped by the wonderful local music scene that this city offers. This special concert features his original music dedicated to and inspired by the people and experiences that Adams has encountered as a musician working in his hometown. Adams’ set will feature a stellar local band including Terry Washington (trumpet), Michael Price (saxophone), Tyler Cain (bass), and Nolan Nevels (drums).

Set Two: Set 2: Drummer/ composer Kenneth Brown plays music inspired by his diverse musical background. These compositions are most influenced by 80s/90s funk, R&B, and Rock music. Featuring Margherita Fava (piano), Dean Torrey (bass), Will Boyd (saxophone) and Terry Washington (trumpet).

Set One: Italian pianist Margherita Fava and her quartet will present music from her debut album “TATATU.” The title is a reference to one of Fava’s first sentences as a child and roughly translates as “I can do it by myself.” The project is self-produced from top to bottom and features a variety of original compositions and arrangements that reflect her unique perspective on the music.

Set Two: Saxophonist/keyboardist Bernell Jones II is a native of Memphis, TN. He graduated from the Jazz Studies program at UTK in 2020, and moved to New York City where he has quickly made a name for himself. Jones has performed with artists as diverse as singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill, rapper Wyclef Jean and trumpeter Philip Harper.

Bernell will present a set of his own music which represents a balance between the Big Apple’s fabled jazz presence and the sound of Memphis’ beloved soul music.

The third and final concert in the NXT GEN series will feature all four bandleaders of the previous shows: Taber Gable, Jack Roben, Margherita Fava, and Sam Adams. This special concert will debut the NXT GEN Big Band; a big band made up of Knoxville’s finest young jazz musicians. Taking place on November 6th at 7:30 PM at the Old City Performing Arts Center, this concert will feature original compositions and arrangements by Gable, Roben, Fava, and Adams. Join us to experience the sound of the NXT GEN!

The second concert in the NXT GEN series will feature bandleaders Margherita Fava and Sam Adams. This show will take place on October 23 at 7:30 PM (doors at 6:30PM) at the Old City Performing Arts Center in downtown Knoxville.

Adams will open the evening with a set dedicated to Knoxville’s very own jazz legend, the great Donald Brown. This set will feature arrangements of Brown’s music as well as Adams’ original compositions inspired by and dedicated to Mr. Brown.

The night will continue with Margherita Fava’s tribute to late great composer and trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who’s musical voice influenced the sound of popular music from the 1990s onward.

The first concert in the NXT GEN Series will feature bandleaders Taber Gable and Jack Roben. This show takes place August 28, 2022 at 7:30 PM at the Old City Performing Arts Center in Downtown Knoxville. (Doors open at 7:00)

Gable will open the evening with music dedicated to the funky, soulful, and one of the founding fathers of hard bop piano, Horace Silver. This set will uniquely dive into compositions, stylings, and artistry of Horace Silver as arranged by Taber Gable.

Jack Roben will be featuring the music of guitarist Jim Hall. In addition to performing Hall’s compositions, Jack will be presenting original music inspired by the tasteful, introspective, and impressionistic qualities of Hall’s playing and writing.

Join us for two sets of music that illustrate how the masters of jazz influence the NXT GEN.
