KJYO in concert with Ryan Middagh

The KJYO is pleased to present guest artist Ryan Middagh for its February 12 concert at Pellissippi State Community College, Hardin Valley campus, in the Clayton Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m..  This concert is free and open to the public and supported by the Mark Hulsether McKee Memorial Jazz Endowment Fund (see more below).

Middagh will perform with the group and the program will also feature his arrangements and compositions. This performance is part of the Spring 2026 PSCC Music Department Concert Series. 

Middagh’s work and performance with the Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra is made possible by a generous gift from the Mark Hulsether McKee Memorial Jazz Endowment Fund. Mark was a trumpet player and member of the KJYO and the endowment honors his memory and love of jazz music. Click here to make a contribution to the endowment. KJYO with guest trombonist Matt Niess

The Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Tom Lundberg, will perform a concert featuring Dr. Matthew Niess. Dr. Niess is a Washington, DC based cross-over Edwards Trombonist and Summit label recording artist. He served in The U.S. Army Band “Pershing's Own” as lead trombone with The Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and trombonist with The U.S. Army Brass Quintet. He is currently a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.

He began his teaching career as Director of Bands at Calvert High School and has since taught at Towson, West Chester, and George Mason Universities. In 2021 he became Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Trombone at Shenandoah Conservatory. He is the founder and director of The Capitol Bones, The National Jazz Workshop, and has appeared as a soloist, clinician, and adjudicator at numerous schools venues throughout the United States.

KJYO with guest pianist Bill Carrothers

The Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Tom Lundberg, will perform a concert featuring jazz pianist Bill Carrothers. An acclaimed educator, performer and recording artist, Carrothers has performed and recorded with artists such as Dave Douglas, Gary Peacock, Bill Stewart and many others. He currently serves on the faculty of Lawrence University in Wisconsin.
