The mission of the Knoxville Jazz Workshop is to inspire, educate and enable the next generation of jazz musicians in East Tennessee. The workshops provide a hands-on learning environment for students at all stages of their musical journey focusing on the fundamental elements of jazz music.

TIME:
Saturdays from 10am-1pm

TUITION:
Tuition is $160 for the semester. Invoice and payment link will be shared after registration.

SCHOLARSHIPS:
Need based scholarships are available. We believe that finances should not prevent a motivated and talented student from participating in our program.

FACULTY:

Margherita Fava

Artistic director, piano

Margherita Fava, born in Follina (ITALY), moved to the USA in 2016 and since then she earned a B.A in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University and a M.M in Jazz and Studio Music at University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

She is now a full time musician, educator, arranger and composer based in Tennessee and collaborates with numerous musicians including Gregory Tardy, Rodney Whitaker, Randy Napoleon, Gina Benalcazar, among others.

Her debut album “TATATU” featuring Greg Tardy and produced by Rodney Whitaker was released on all streaming platforms in March 2023 and received a 4-star review on Downbeat Magazine.

Rob Linton

Jazz bass, combos

 Rob Linton is a versatile bassist and improviser of many genres from Charlotte, NC. After completing his Masters degree in Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Rob has had the privilege of performing with many great musicians including Greg Tardy, Eric Reed, Kenneth Brown, Rod McGaha, Mark Boling, Keith Brown, Taber Gable, Ocie Davis, Louis Heriveaux and many others. Rob currently teach jazz bass at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Kevin Krapf

Drum set

Kevin Krapf resides in Knoxville, playing drums as a bandleader for his own jazz trio and quartet. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music studying with Shaun Scheutz at Maryville College, then went on to complete his Masters of Music in Jazz Percussion at the University of Tennessee under Keith Brown. In recent years he has continued his pursuit of drumming excellence by studying with world-renowned jazz drummer Gregory Hutchinson. He performs regionally in a wide variety of musical situations. In the realm of jazz he can be seen locally with Greg Tardy, Will Boyd, Taber Gable and Sam Adams, but he also supplies drums for other notable groups such as The Fine Columbians: A Steely Dan Tribute Band and Candela, a large latin music ensemble that plays dance-driven styles such as Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue and Bachata.

Joseph Jordan

Trumpet

Joseph Jordan is an outstanding trumpeter and music educator from Middle Tennessee. He has recorded with several gospel and pop artists in Nashville, including Benita Washington and Michael Hicks for Vergil Stratford. Upon moving to the Knoxville area in 2010 he has worked on a number of local projects including the Black Lillies, the Black Cadillacs, the Dirty Guv’nahs, Devan Jones and the uptown stomp, the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, Clarence Brown Theater’s productions, and Vance Thompson's Five Plus Six.

Joseph received a scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee earning a master’s degree in Jazz performance, where he served in various ensembles and capacities. He has taught at Knox County Schools, Knoxville Christian Youth Bands, private school, private lessons, as well as various after-school programs for underprivileged youth in the Knoxville area including the Joy of Music School and Community School for the Arts. His trumpet students have received numerous scholarships to universities in the Tennessee area. Mr. Jordan taught instrumental music at Gresham Middle School for three years, bringing: chamber ensembles, solo and ensemble, and new instruments, all while assisting and reintroducing jazz band to the curriculum at Knox Central High School.

Mr. Jordan is a Tri-M scholar, Phi Kappa Lambda, and Alpha Phi Alpha honors society member. He resides in Lenoir City, Tennessee with his wife Claire, their son Oliver, and daughter Josephine. He currently serves as the Instructor of High Brass at the University of the Cumberlands.

Michael Price

Saxophone

Saxophonist Michael Price is a graduate of Central High School in Memphis, TN and an alumnus of the Memphis Jazz Workshop. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz at the University of Tennessee under the mentorship of professor Gregory Tardy. Michael is an outstanding player with a passion for sharing his knowledge with others. His goal as an educator is to unlock the potential within each individual and help propel students to a higher level of performance.
